"Man of Steel"

On a trip to the Middle East, Jon Porter photographed a
poem written on a white board in a motor pool where armor plating
was being added to military vehicles as protection against roadside
bombs. The poem was written by a civilian army mechanic named
Matthew Lightfoot who now lives in Texas. He wrote it as a
going-away gift to his buddies when he returned home in 2005. Jon
sent the picture to Randy Berka who had just gone through the tragic
loss of his sister to cancer and asked Randy to channel his emotions
into writing a song about the poem. The result was a sullen ballad
called “Man of Steel” which the band reworked into a hard-driving
rock number and recorded at Junior’s Motel Studio in Otho, IA on
November 10, 2007 (Veterans Day weekend). It is the first studio
work by the band in 37 years and the first original tune they have
ever recorded under the name Lazy River Band. The band
has agreed to donate all proceeds from “Man of Steel” to a
charitable cause, the Armed
Forces Foundation. According to songwriter Randy Berka, "The song is a tribute to our
servicemen and women so they know that
we see them as heroes."
